On October 3, 2003 The American Jewish Committee reported that they had urged the Texas House of Representatives to "delay its debate and vote on redistricting, which currently is scheduled to take place on Yom Kippur. 'Just as the House would not convene on Easter or Christmas, it should not convene, certainly not to consider such sensitive matters, on a solemn day of observance for its Jewish members,' the AJC said in a letter to Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick. AJC urged the House to adjourn the debate and votes until the Yom Kippur holiday ends on Monday evening.
