On December 9, 1998, the American Muslim Council issued a pressrelease expressing their appreciation for the "efforts of the USMilitary in providing greater understanding and accommodation forMuslims in the Service during Ramadan and `Id al Fitr." The statementcontinued, "The Armed Forces Chaplains Board has issued notificationthat during Ramadan, Muslims in the Service may be released from dutyat least half-an-hour before sunset to help them break their fast.The memorandum has also suggested to exempt Muslims from rigorousdaily physical and field training during the month.
